March themes: True North Alignment & 10 Tenets of Baptiste Yoga

This Month we are using 2 Themes: True North Alignment and 10 Tenets of Baptiste Yoga

First Theme:

True North Alignment: EARTH and WATER

1. Ground down like EARTH

FEET Both feet face 12 o’clock

Ground down the 4 corners of the feet

Stretch the toes out on the mat

LEGS Inner ankles back, outer ankles down, outer shins in

From the skin to the muscle to the bone, hug in

2. Flow like WATER

Soften the joints

Keep the pelvis neutral;

Lift the front of the pelvis as the tailbone descends

All asanas originate from True North Alignment. When fully embodied, this alignment balances all of the elements, leaving students physically activated and powerful yet at ease in the work.

The actions of True North Alignment bring students into plumb, or align them to
their plumb line. A plumb line is an essential building tool that allows a builder
to determine verticality in their work. When a structure is 100 percent vertical, it
can stand effortlessly, as all of the force and weight from above is stacked directly
above its supporting structure.

In your body, the plumb line is a spatial term that places your body in optimal alignment in relationship to the ground below. In proper anatomical position your joints line up with a straight plumb line to the floor. This generates an effortless center from which you can flow.

As you put your attention on and speak to specific body parts, and you move
up the body, building True North Alignment, you bring your students into the
experience of plum and natural anatomical alignment. In Baptiste Yoga, we use
the organizing principles of True North Alignment to establish each student’s
physical foundation, giving them the experience of their centerline, contraction
and expansion, and what’s possible in the physical expression of the pose.

The actions of True North Alignment principles create the physical context where
your students will discover for themselves in their real as-lived experience the
manifestation of authentic power and new possibility.

“It is through the alignment of my body that I discovered the alignment of my mind, self, and intelligence” - B.K.S. Iyengar
