Brian (Ba Yubrah)

My name is Brian Kangethe, popularly known as Ba Yubrah. I was raised and currently live in an informal settlement called Kangemi, located on the outskirts of Nairobi. I was born as an only child to a single mother who passed away when I was five years old. Growing up with various guardians unfulfilling and distinctly somber childhood.

My school life was incredibly unstable and I dropped after my primary education due to lack of funds. This exposed me to street life and hustling. To survive, I turned to crime. With this way of life, drugs and alcohol were my solutions to numbing out and hiding from myself and my actions.

While living and navigating the streets of Nairobi, I miraculously met Azi Embodoka, who introduced me and a few of my friends to acrobatics. This was the light at the end of the tunnel of strife hustling in the streets. It was during this time I met Paige Elenson, founder of the Africa Yoga Project (AYP), and the AYP family.

From the magical touch and transformational experiences through AYP teacher trainings and workshops, I empowered to lead and be a role model for my community, friends, and students. Yoga has inspired me to be a better person in the way I live and how I face life’s challenges. I’ve gained courage and confidence and am much more present within my interactions with others as well as with myself.

I am a Baptiste certified yoga instructor. I have completed the Radiant Child Yoga certification, the Next Generation Kids yoga certification, the Baptiste Level II in Mombasa, the Lead the Change workshop with Baron Baptiste, the AYP 200hr Teacher Training, as well as many other workshops and trainings. Recently, I was selected to participate in the successful Hugs, Handstands, and Happiness (HHH) 2016 tour, through which I travelled throughout the United States teaching yoga and shared the mission and values of AYP.

I feel a unique connection with everyone who practices yoga because we are all challenged in one way or another, on and off the mat. Through yoga, we connect to bring balance, peace, harmony, and love to our local and global communities. The largest gift I have gained from my practice, is the understanding that there is more peace to giving and sharing myself than when taking from others. By sharing my practice I feel at ease, content and whole; all of which I hope to impart through teaching.

Currently, I teach at the Shine Center on Thursdays 9AM and 1pm and have various private classes throughout the week. Please feel free to contact me for more information on classes at:
